Maryland added 307 new board-certified teachers to its ranks this year, a 22 percent increase from last year.
FIRST PGCEA educators honored
Nearly 250 teachers from 12 Prince George’s County public schools were honored recently for their participation in the Financial Incentive Awards for Supervisors & Teachers(FIRST) Program funded by the federal Teacher Incentive Fund, which awarded Prince George’s County Public Schools $17.1 million.

Maryland’s public schools made news again when The College Board reported that the state ranks first in the number of high school seniors taking and passing rigorous Advanced Placement courses. Thanks to increased funding and MSDE support, AP classes are accessible to more students, but concerns remain that African American and low-income student participation is still lagging behind the general student population. The news came within weeks of Education Week’s Quality Counts report ranking Maryland schools tops in the nation and a report from MGT of America that links the $3.4 billion in additional Thornton funding of the past six years to the significant increases in student performance—specifically gains in reading and math.
