What does an MSTA delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly do?
Every state affiliate sends a delegation to the annual NEA Representative Assembly to set the course for the Association. The number of delegates is set by the total membership of the state. This year, Maryland is allocated 40 delegates. MSTA officers and board members are automatically eligible delegates. According to the NEA 2009 Handbook, the Representative Assembly:
- Establishes Association policies and objectives
- Elects NEA officers, Board of Directors, Executive Committee
- Adopts the budget
- Establishes dues
- Approves/ratifies the establishment of subsidiary corporate structures
- Exercises final authority in all Association matters
- Amends the constitution and bylaws
- Adopts rules and agenda governing meetings
- Enacts other measures necessary to achieve the Association’s goals and objectives
