Thanks and a proclamation from Governor O'Malley
Celebrating teachers across the state, Governor O'Malley proclaimed Tuesday, May 4-10 Teacher Appreciation Week in Maryland. “I proudly join students, parents and members of local communities across the state in thanking our more than 100,000 teachers and other staff who bring their best every day to our students,” the Governor said.  “Through their hard work and dedication, great teachers spark our children's curiosity and teach them to become lifelong learners.” Read more >>

Middle schoolers enjoy a good read …or 10!
NEA recently tapped MSTA's Radical Readers Contest as the top middle school Read Across America program. The contests boosts reading and literacy for the ‘tween set in a four-month contest, and required students to read, then write about 10 books and submit their work for the statewide drawing.

NEA-sponsored National Teacher Day is May 6!
In 1944, Arkansas teacher activist Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with political and education leaders, including Eleanor Roosevelt, about the need for a national day to honor teachers. In 1953, Roosevelt persuaded Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day.

Now, National Teacher Appreciation Week and National Teacher Day dominate the first week of May, drawing attention to the crucial role teachers play in providing a great public school for every child in the U.S. Learn more >>
